Foundations, endowments, and families today are aware that the capital they invest has an effect on the world that may or may not be in line with the investors’ beliefs, values, or missions. We have broad experience helping our clients establish and implement socially responsible investing (SRI) or environmental, social, and governance (ESG) guidelines.
There are many ways to ensure that investments align with beliefs, from basic exclusionary tactics to impact investing and even active ownership roles, and we guide our clients through the possibilities to find the one that suits them best. Many are surprised that, done well, SRI can achieve similar returns to a portfolio without such constraints.
Once guidelines are in place, we customize our approach so that clients are able to remain in best-of-breed funds, rather than being limited to a list of SRI or commingled funds. We then help measure the portfolio against stated SRI or ESG guidelines, so that our clients understand how their investments are supporting their beliefs.
